Hard Working Class Heroics - Friday
friday of HWCH 2011 in review
an atmospheric and energetic one man show, toby kaar fills the stage in a way that one man truly should not be able to do. his songs are filled with a sort of summer laden, quirky noise infused quality that gives new vigor to his remixes and a unique quality to his own stylings. whilst the crowd was slightly slow to requite (the night after the night before and all that), less than ten minutes in, the floor shook with the reverb of his thumping bass lines, and there was no one in the room left motionless. well played sir, well played.

fresh off the back of their “yeah, nothing” album release, this was a band from which i thought i knew what to expect, having seen them only a month ago. i was wrong. they filled out the grand stage of the button factory with a fervent energy that matched the large arena. surf pop with gritty, distorted guitar riffs bolstering the perfectly pitched falsetto harmonies, these boys took serious command of the stage from the second they banged into their opening riff.

with the track “magnetic heart” off sleep thieves debut release HeartWaves comandeering an inordinant amount of airplay on my ipod, their show was not one that i could miss, and they certainly didn’t dissapoint. Electro-synth fused with delicious off beat pulses and noises, sets a perfect backdrop to the lead singer Sorcha’s impeccibly timed and tuned lyrical prowess. An impressive threesome, they get lost within their own music, and take the crowd to this magical place with them. Certainly a show and band i can’t wait to see again. stunning.

JESUS.
i could stop there, and anyone that was in the workman’s club on friday would understand fully what i mean. the le galaxie show was vital, intense and utterly captivating. A packed dance floor gyrated along to every quirky, riff laden, noise drenched song that the band belted out, and scrambled for the strewn glowsticks like they were a last meal, as the band thudded, bounced and gesticulated through their set… this is a tightly honed band that undoubtedly know how to put on a SHOW…. they can be summed up in one word,
(their own) ….
TUNE!
